Okay...so I'm Lazy. (FHSCB)

So I didn't get the parts to "Scarborough" scanned like I thought I would. I apologize. I have done some serious score study on all three pieces though, so I am as ready as I have ever been for a concert/contest season. If you haven't listened to all three pieces yet, please make sure to go to the members' pageto download them in mp3 format. If you need the password, please email me

Last to defend is going to be easier than I expected, but there are some seriously tough parts as far as balance and intonation go...like very soft chords with flutes and French horns in their upper range. There are also LOTS of percussion parts to work out. Scarborough fair is very challenging for woodwinds and percussion, but not so much for brasses. It'll just take some time to work out fingerings and rhythms.

Because of the muscial concerns, I have scheduled some after-school sectionals. Please check the calandar of events to find out when they are. Percussion sectiona…

Tsunami Help

In case you hadn't heard:
Powerful earthquake, tsunamis strike South Asia, leaving thousands dead, injured and missing
Sunday, December 26, 2004 — The largest earthquake to strike the globe since 1964 has caused devastating tsunami waves that have killed thousands in south Asia. The 8.9-magnitude quake hit December 26 off the coast of Indonesia, triggering these extremely large waves that have brought massive flooding, damage and loss of life in the region.

Waves as high as 20 feet have crashed into the coastal areas near the Bay of Bengal. Among the worst affected countries are Sri Lanka and India, as well as Indonesia, Maldives and Thailand. Reports are that thousands of people are missing, and it is possible that the number of dead may tragically rise in the coming days.

International Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in south Asia have begun to mobilize staff and volunteers to affected areas to assist with the immediate needs. Emergency assessment and first-aid teams have al…

Merry Christmas

What I'm Listening to: George Winston - December

The children are nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of sugar plums dance in their heads.

I love Christmas Eve. :-)

P.S. - If you haven't tracked Santa yet, visit www.noradsanta.com

It's late...and it's snowing

I'm at my parents' house in Datyon. Everyone else is in bed and I'm still up watching the snow come down out the window. It's a very peaceful scene. The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow gives the luster of midday to objects below. It's a funky glow. George Winston's "December" is coming through my earbuds and I'm getting sleepy. Tomorrow we head home in the snow to get ready for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Maria and Sam are going to be two happy kids after Santa comes. Mrs. Keller and I are two lucky parents to have such neat kids.

I hope that peace and happiness is with you all and those you love this holiday season.

I truly had a wonderful time seeing all of you and catching up. It warms my heart to see you all in the band room again and it seems just like old times...like no time has passed at all. You are all a very important part of the history and tradition of this music program, and I'm glad you feel comfortable enough to come back and re-live the old times. It was doubly fantastic because you all helped the team to one of its greatest comeback victories in recent me…

FHSCB - Listen Up!

I just posted recordings of "They Led My Lord Away" and "Variations on Scarborough Fair" on the member web site. I'll have "Last to Defend" sometime this week. Please listen before our next rehearsal.

What a great Holiday Concert!

Image
I want to congratulate all of the fine Fairbanks musicians on their fine performances last night at the annual Holiday Concert. I'm very proud of all of my groups for the class, professionalism, enthusiasm, and musicianship they showed last night. Pictures of the concert are on the picture page, including the formal and crazy FHSCB pics that were taken after the concert.

I sincerely appreciate all of the parents, family, and friends of the Fairbanks Music Department for coming to the concert and filling every seat. Not every district has this kind of support for the arts in our schools. Mrs. Nicol, Ms. Mack, Mrs. Noland, and I take great pride in our music and art, and know that our situation is extraordinary. We are thankful for the support you give to our fine Fairbanks students in their artistic endeavors!

So...I DID get sick.

Well, I tried to make it through unscathed, but I got the thing that Sam and Maria got at about 3 AM Sunday. I'm coming to school Monday because I MUST... especially since JH band has not played their program since Wednesday of last week. It's going to be a busy day, but I need everyone's help to get through the day. Do your part. Follow directions. Be prepared. I'm not going to be much good for very long, as I'm still getting over this flu thing.

You all are going to do GREAT on Monday's concert. Best of luck to all my performers!

Pep Band Pics 12/10

Image
Pics have been posted from Friday night's game. Good job everyone!

Pep Band Friday

Okay...tonight is IT. Our pep band debut is this evening. Rehearsal is at 5:30 and we'll play around 7. Be sure to wear your pep band t-shirts. Refreshments will be available in the band room during the 3rd quarter of the varsity game. We'll be done around 9. Come prepared to make a difference in the home opener vs. Marion Catholic.

Funky Thursday

Well...Sam is throwing up so I'm home with him this AM. Mrs. Keller and I will be switching at mid-day so HS choir and band will be able to have their rehearsals in the gym today. As far as HS interims go...it's very unfortunate that that they got moved to today. I'll have progress reports for anyone who received less than an A+ due to attendance issues. Everyone else is doing just great. If anyone has any concerns about this afternoon or interim grades, just email me. I'm just hoping I don't get this puking thing or it could be an interesting concert on Monday!

Marysville Parade Pics

Image
I've posted pics from our final marching band event of the year, the Marysville holiday parade, on the picture page. Everyone looked and sounded great and I've gotten lots of positive comments about your performance. A job well done!

Alumni Band Update!

The response to the first-ever Fairbanks Alumni Pep Band on December 21 has been outstanding! We've got 15 people registered, covering all parts but Mellophone and Trombone. We could use a few more trumpets, too! Please go to the alumni band page to read all the info and to register. The turnout has already been better than I expected, so please come join the crowd and have some fun. It doesn't matter if you haven't played your instrument since high school. If we're not real good, we'll just play loud and hope no one notices that we're bad :-) I'll post a list of who's coming later this weekend so you can see which of your friends will be there. Maybe that will get you to join us too! If you have any questions whatsoever, please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions. Remember that if you register before December 10, I'll send you music in the mail so you can be quasi-prepared! Hope to see you on the 21st!
