Filled with Music

"I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music."

--George Eliot (1819 - 1880)

Good Leaders

"Good leaders make people feel that they're at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she makes a difference to the success of the organization. When that happens people feel centered and that gives their work meaning."
-- Warren Bennis

P.S. - Have a great weekend!

Since We're On The Topic of Presidential Quotes...

Here's a great one about leadership:

"A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done."

-- Dwight D. Eisenhower

One of my all time favorites...

This quote has been on my wall since my first day of teaching twelve years ago:

"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat."

-Theodore Roosevelt (1858 - 1919)

P.S. - Charles W. Fairbanks was Roosevelt's Vice President!

Responsibility to Teach?

"If you would thoroughly know anything, teach it to others."

-Tryon Edwards (1809 - 1894)

What is failure?

"People are not failures because they have one, two or even thirty setbacks. They become failures only when they stop trying."
-- Donald Norfolk

Amos Lee - You Should Listen

I have been exploring a lot of new music lately, especially with all the Pepsi caps you all have been giving me. (Thanks again!). Probably the best thing I've heard in the last few weeks is Amos Lee's debut. The instrumentation is very "folkish" and so are his songs, but his voice is very soul-flavored. Kind of a cross between Norah Jones and John Legend...both of whom I think are fantastic in their own way. Check it out!

Your Guard Captain!

Congratulations to Victoria Welch who has been selected as Guard Captian for the 2005 FMB!

FMB - I just got a note from Stauffer

I just thought I'd let FMB members know I just got another note from Mr. Stauffer. If you hadn't heard, he and Melanie are expecting a baby on or around October 21! He is also looking forward to returning to our camp again this year. He wanted me to tell the trumpets that " I still have my trumpet poster up in the band room, with smiling faces!"

FMB - I Can't Believe It...the Show Is DONE!

I must be honest, I never had any idea how hard it would be to arrange my own show. Mind you, my skills as a composer are pretty rudimentary, so I utilized several different arrangements and pieced some things together, changed some endings, added some transitions, and inserted several solos. Getting the wind parts ready to go took me a month of daily/nightly work all on its own. For the last three weeks I've been writing the percussion parts from scratch. It's been one of the most creatively challenging things I've ever done, but it has also been one of the most rewarding!

I'll be making revisions over the next week, making sure all the details are right. Then I have to extract the parts and make sure they are readable by you, then I'll have copies to you by the first of May. As soon as I have audio files ready to go, I'll post them for you to listen to.

It's taken me a lot of time and effort, but I feel I know this show inside out. I think once you s…

Field Commander Audition Results

Congratulations to Sean Knaub, who will be the FMB field commander for the 2005-2006 season! Mr. Keller and the judging panel would like to thank all band members who expressed interest and auditioned for the position. The quality of the auditions was high and you should all be proud of your accomplishments. I hope everyone wishes Sean the best of luck in his endeavor.

All seniors and students in band leadership positions are reminded that permission slips and $20 payment for the Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser leadership workshop is due by Monday, April 25. Make checks payable to "Attitude Concepts." We will stop for dinner on the way and a snack on the way home, so please bring a bit of spending money. We leave at 2 and return at 9:30.

I know I already posted a couple quotes earlier today, but I couldnt' pass this one up:

"Courage is saying, 'Maybe what I'm doing isn't working; maybe I should try something else.' "
--Anna Lappe

Quotes on Leadership and Fantasy

"Men make history, and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better."
-- Harry S. Truman

"Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living. It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope…and that enables you to laugh at all of life's realities."
-- Dr. Seuss

A great quote from "The Greatest"

"I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been."
-- Wayne Gretzky

Benjamin Franklin Says:

One of the most important lessons I have ever learned in my life:

"Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment."

-Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790)

What Time Is It?

"A man with a watch knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure."
-Segal's Law
