Happy Thanksgiving

Wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy your break :-)

Something I Have Believed All Along...

"Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart."

-Shinichi Suzuki (Japanese violinist and teacher who introduced millions of children to his "Suzuki Method", 1898-1998)

Pep Band Tshirt Design

Okay...here it is. The pep band tshirt design. I though my creative juices had run out until my friend Dave popped up on my desktop to tell me "True Dat". I'll have them available the week after Thanksgiving. $10 cash or check payable to Fairbanks Music Boosters. Click the pic to enlarge.

Wise Words from Comedians

"Never continue in a job you don't enjoy. If you're happy in what you're doing, you'll like yourself, you'll have inner peace. And if you have that, along with physical health, you will have had more success than you could possibly have imagined."
-Johnny Carson (1925 - 2005)

"You cannot be mad at somebody who makes you laugh - it's as simple as that."
-Jay Leno (1950 - )

Thanks for Great Veteran's Day

Image
I just wanted to take a momet to thank all of the FMB members for adding a special touch to both Veterans' Day assemblies today. The little things like this that you do mean a lot to many, many people. You sounded great, and made a great impression. Thanks for proudly playing when called upon. (much like our men and women in uniform do every day!) It's important to pause at least once a year and appreciate those who commit their lives to preserving our freedom.

BTW....FHSCB - Keep up the good work on Sleigh Ride. I'm very impressed so far. Brent could not believe it was only our SECOND rehearsal on that piece!

A Great Day of Band Rehearsals

I just wanted to let the JHCB and the FHSCB know that it was a great day of rehearsal. Thanks especially to FHSCB percussionists for working so well on the percussion ensemble! Keep up the good work. Four weeks to the Holiday Concert!

A Picture From MuStaffah

Here's a picture Mr. Stauffer sent to me of the family. If you would like to send him a message, send an email to me and I would be happy to forward it on to him, and Ryan....and Evan....and Trey....and Melanie :-)

Levy is Defeated

The levy on Tuesday's ballot that would have built a new K-8 building for Fairbanks students went down in defeat today by a a 53%-47% margin. We will continue to be overcrowded in non-air conditioned rooms with crumbling walls. Just thought you would like to know.

Music Boosters Wed. 6:30 @ Buck Ridge

The monthly booster meeting will be Wednesday night at 6:30 at the Buck Ridge Golf Course clubhouse. Topics of discussion including fundraising and the trip to NYC! All band and choir parents are invited to attend.

Fairbanks Alumni - Pep Band Game Dec. 20!

The SECOND ANNUAL Fairbanks Alumni Pep Band will convene on December 20 at 6 PM for the Panthers' varsity basketball game. All Fairbanks band alumni are invited (not just pep band members), and we had a great time last year. Won't you join us? Please spread the word to all of your Fairbanks Band friends, too! More info is available on the Fairbanksband.org Alumni Band Page.

Pics from the Levy Rally

Image
Pictures from the short and sweet levy rally have been posted on the picture page. Thanks to the 16 bandos who showed up and played and twirled their best...you guys kicked butt!

NYC Update

We now have 48 students claiming they want to go (but only 7 with paid deposits), so that opens a sixth chaperone spot. I still only have five chaperones who have paid their deposit, so the next chaperone who pays should have a guaranteed spot!

Deposits are due NO LATER than November 30. After that date, no one may be added, as we have to buy tickets for our broadway shows on December 1!

Guard Page is Up

The new and improved Guard Page is up. It's updated by Miss V, so there will be NO mis-information. All guard members (marching and winter) should check it regularly. Bandos are welcome to visit too!

I'm Out; Levy Rally

I'm home with Sam today...he's sick.

The rally is on for tonight! The school will be open at 6:30...please pick up your instrument and take it to Milford with you. This goes for everyone, including tubas and percussion. We'll start at 7 at FES and be done by 7:30 at the latest. Then you can take your instrument back to the school, or take it home with you and return it Tuesday AM.

Keep your fingers crossed for the bond levy! If you're 18, be sure to vote!

FHSCB - Greensleeves!

I have an mp3 of Greensleeves on the Member Page. It's a very good recording that you can learn a lot from!

FHSCB - GREENSLEEVES recording! (And Sleigh Ride)

I found a recording online. It's in RealAudio format, so you'll have to listen to stream, and have the RealAudio Player. Click here for the file, and here if you need RealPlayer

Update:
There's also a wind band version of Sleigh Ride on the same page. Click HERE to hear it!

FHSCB & JHCB - More Music Online

Image
FHSCB - Dashing is now on the member page. Percussion music for Christmas Holiday is available for download in RealAudio format at the Row-Loff Concert Music Page.

JHCB - The audio file for Polar X-Press is now on the member page as well.

Fundraising Stuff is Not Here

I want to apologize to all those students and parents who were expecting fundraising items today. The trucking company hired by Nestle-Beich was extremely uncooperative in their delivery today. The problem has been addressed on several levels and I have been assured that everything will be delivered early tomorrow morning and available for pickup at your regular class time tomorrow. I also want to apologize to 5th and 6th grade teachers who were so accomodating in the original plan for their students to get their stuff.

Thanks again for your patience and cooperation in this matter. Believe me...no one was more angry or frustrated than I today. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. Sincerely, BK

FHSCB - Please check the BLOG daily.

FHSCB members might have noticed that rehearsal is going to be a little hectic with so many people in the room. Here's a couple of ways to cut down on the distractions:

1. Make sure your instrument is working:
If it is not, without asking, just get my instrument out of my office and use your mouthpiece so we can deal with your repair AFTER rehearsal is over.

2. Prioritize questions:
If you questions is not essential or an emergency, please ask outside of rehearsal time. The best way to get specific and detailed answers is by emailing me in the evening.

3. Be responsible for you:
Be on time. Be prepared for class. Have your music practiced and prepared for the next rehearsal.

4. Get used to not talking:
58 people is a LOT OF PEOPLE. Please realize I'm not trying to be mean, but that communication is impossible if everyone says what they want to say when they want to say it. Keep conversation to a minimum. If you must discuss the music with your stand partner, please whisper.

FHSCB & JHCB Listening

Listening examples have been posted on the members' page for you to listen to. The members' page was out of commission after the big blow up last week, but it's back in action and ready for you to use again!
