Compliments on Your Performances

I always like to forward on comments about your performances that I receive, so here's an update for band and choir members.

First, Mr. Montgomery, Miss Brill, and Mrs. McCoy all commented on Saturday that you pep band members did a fine job in my absence on Friday night. I know it wasn't an ideal situation, but apparently your effort was noticed and the audience enjoyed the performance regardless of what little problems you may have had due to me not being there. I'm proud of you all and so are many other people! BTW, pictures from Friday's game are on the picture page.

Secondly, I've had so many friends, parents, and faculty comment on your quality performance on Wednesday's concert that I can't even remember them all. You got the ultimate seal of approval from my Mom, as well kudos from Mr. Craycraft, Mrs. Lucas, Mrs. Ballard, Mrs. Noland, Mr. Rebmann, and Mrs. Keller. Just a reminder that video podcasts of the concert are available for download if y…

Concert Video Podcasts

Videos from Wednesday's annual Holiday Concert are available for download by clicking the links below. You can stream them, download them, or add them to your iTunes library to put on your video iPod. Quicktime is required, so if you don't have it, go HERE to download it for free. Mostly due to the file size, I have edited the footage, so not all pieces from each group are in the podcasts.

Thanks to all the participants of the third annual Alumni Pep Band! I had a great time and it was wonderful seeing you all and getting a chance to catch up with what you've been up to and to play again like the old days. We'll do it again next year! Thanks again to Funny for organizing the event including registration and sending out music. Too bad we couldn't have a Panther victory for your return.

Everyone have a relaxing Sunday :-)

Tonight's Game is On, But....

I'm home sick, so Funny will be running tonight's pep band game. Here are the changes you need to know about:

1. There will be no reharsal tonight. You need to meet in the band room/stage area at 7:15 then set up and get ready to play.

2. Regular seating arrangement on the stage.

3. Please be as helpful and flexible as possible. Do everything in your power to help Funny make things work tonight.

4. Follow all rules pertaining to food/drink, staying on the stage, what you can say/not say.

5. Leave the chairs on the stage after the game. We need them for tomorrow night's game.

6. Please leave the band room cleaner than you found it.

I'm hoping I'll be well enough to come to tomorrow night's game, seniors and alumni. In the meantime, Funny rules!

Pep Band Friday!

Friday night is a regular pep band game. We'll rehearse at 6PM. Wear your shirt. Let's cheer our undefeated Panthers on to another victory!

Saturday's game is the third annual Fairbanks Alumni Pep Band! Seniors are invited to play along with the 25 alumni we have participating. Everyone else gets a chance to be a "spectator" of the pep band. If you are an alumni and still want to participate, please contact Mr. Keller ASAP! More info is on the alumni band web page.

6th Band Schedule Next Week

I've had to adjust the 6th grade band schedule slightly due to gym availability. Next week, the 6th grade band will rehearse in the gym on TUESDAY and Wednesday (instead of Mon/Wed) as originally published. Thanks!

5th Grade Band - Progress Reports

Progress reports for fifth grade band students go home today (Wednesday). Parents - please ask your student to see it. Please do not hesitate at all to contact me if you need further information or would like to discuss your child's progress in person, on the phone, or via email.

Quote of the Day - Vision

"Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such."
-- Henry Miller

Interims, Progress Reports, Bonus Points

Interims come out this week and I first want to say that I am very please with the quality of musicianship I am getting out of all of my performers. Fifth grade band is progressing steadily and we've only lost two members so far...33 remain! The sixth grade band has been learning to play together and is very excited about performing on this year's holiday concert. The junior high concert band has made leaps and bounds of improvement since the beginning of the year, and will be tackling more challenging (and more fun!) music after the holidays. My high school choir, consisting of over HALF freshmen, has exceeded my expectations to become one of the finest choirs in my tenure. The FHSCB is also at what I would say is its highest level of technique and musicianship in many years. They have prepared a difficult program for next week's concert and we're very hopeful that we can achieve a "superior" rating at district contest in March.

Quote of the Day - "Patience"

"Patience serves as a protection against wrongs as clothes do against cold. For if you put on more clothes as the cold increases, it will have no power to hurt you. So in like manner you must grow in patience when you meet with great wrongs, and they will then be powerless to vex your mind."
-Leonardo da Vinci (1452 - 1519)

Pep Band - Good Comments!

I just wanted to drop all pep band members a little note to let you know Mr. Craycraft, your superintendent, dropped by to see me first period on Monday to let me know he enjoyed your Friday night performance and that you sounded great. Bravo!

Parade Absentees (You know who you are)

Just a reminder to those band members who were absent at Sunday's parade without prior approval need to present a note from a parent on Monday to be excused, as per the Fairbanks Band Handbook. This is critical as interim grades are due Monday night and if a note is not submitted on Monday, the absence will be listed as unexcused for your mid-term grade. If you forget a note, you can still bring it in on Tuesday, but the "D" grade will show up on your interim report.

I'm most disappointed that some of you (two members) did not bother to contact me about your illness. You all know that you need to call my office phone or cell phone if you are ill before a performance. Having someone else tell me "Oh, by the way, so-and-so won't be here today" is not the responsible way to take care of an absence. Please be sure to get me a parent-signed note ASAP.

Marysville Parade Pics and Thank-You's

FMB Marysville Parade 12/3/06
Originally uploaded by fhsbando. Pictures from the Marysville Holiday Parade have been posted on the picture page.

Thanks to each member who braved the cold today and made this a quality performance. Thanks also to Hannah for being an outstanding field commander on short notice, the boosters for the hot chocolate, Mr. Rohrer for helping me load and unload all the stuff and for towing the trailer, and to Mr. Bob Sements for giving us access to restrooms and heat!

Now you can enjoy the rest of the holiday season "parade-free"! See you Monday :-)

Quote of the Day

FMB - Parade Sunday

Just a reminder for FMB members that Sunday is the Marysville Holiday parade. The school is open at noon if you need instruments, etc. We warm at 1:15 at Marysville MIDDLE SCHOOL. The parade starts at 2PM and we end at the Methodist Church on 6th and Court Streets at 2:30. Please come prepared for the cold weather with gloves under gloves and hats under hats. Could be worse...could be raining...or snowing! I'll have raincoats there so we can stay extra warm! See you there!

Just In Case You're Coming To Tonight's Game

Just FYI: The Freshman game, originally scheduled for 5PM, did not start until 5:40 because the officials were not here. The JV GAme just started at 6:55 and the Varsity game probably will not get underway until about 8PM.

Okay...So It's My Turn (I'm out this AM ONLY)

So now I'm sick. My throat is sore and I can't really talk. But, I can't really afford to miss today since we have a concert in two weeks and our first pep band tonight. So here's the deal:

I'll be out this morning while I go to the Dr. and get some antibiotics. JH band will continue watching a movie, so will General Music. 6th grade band WILL have class and will practice individually or in small groups.

I'll be in at lunch and will rehearse 5th grade percussionists, HS Choir, and HS Concert band.

Tonight's game for the Pep Band is ON. Please be here ready to rehearse at 6PM. Wear your shirt, and enter through the front doors of the high school.
