It's extremely foggy and icy where I'm at, so I'm not surprised that classes are canceled today. See you on Thursday. Please be prepared for rehearsal. Marching Band in New Orleans

Here's a great article about the state of high school marching bands in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. I'm sure that things will bounce back eventually, but as of now it's a struggle to field a band for the annual Mardis Gras parades.

Back to School; Challenges; Concert

Back to school on Tuesday. Please be prepared to play or sing. 6th brasses will meet as it is an A day. Fifth flutes, clarinets, and saxophones will have class. JHCB, FHSCB, and Choir will all rehearse.

Pep Band Senior Night 2/16/07

Pep Band Senior Night 2/16/07
Originally uploaded by fhsbando. Pictures of Senior Night are on the Picture Page. Congratulations to the Panther boys basketball team for their overtime victory and conference championship, with an undefeated conference record!

You all did a wonderful job this season, keeping the crowd and the team in the game, as well as building performance skills and playing a LOT of music!

Enjoy your weekend and see you on Tuesday!

Friday Night's Game is ON, BABY!

Senior night will go on as planned on Friday night. We'll warm at 7 PM. Seniors, if you have changes to your write ups, email them to Mrs. Reed ASAP. If you still feel uncomfortable about being out on the roads, I understand, but I must say that they are in pretty good shape...I've been out a few times. See you there!

Winter Guard Update - We're Going

From Mrs. Barker:

"We are going to try and go after all. I will keep you posted"
We will keep you posted.

No School Thursday

No school Thursday (via Enjoy your EXTENDED weekend. I wish we had some rehearsal time, but it's out of my hands, so no use fretting about things I can't control.

I'll let you know about Friday night's game as soon as I know.

Senior Night Friday: Stay Tuned

Our final pep band gig is this Friday. It is senior night, so I'm guessing that if the roads are passable, the game will be on. Keep checking here to see what the status is.

If the game is on, we will warm at 7:00 in the band room. Even if the game is on and you don't feel safe traveling to FHS, please use your better judgment. I'd rather you miss the game than make a treacherous drive. I'll let you know as soon as I know.

I don't know the status on school being open Thursday. I'll let you know as soon as I know.

No School Tuesday or Wednesday

I'm guessing you've figured out there's no school today. I got the call at 5:15 AM so I slept in this morning. I got the call for tomorrow at about 2PM. No school on Wednesday either. That's it for our freebie snow days. I hope we can see each other on Thursday...we kinda have this concert/contest thing coming up in a few weeks! Enjoy your days off to the fullest. If you're bored, you might want to think about practicing your horn/drums. Challenges will be when we get back.

Challenges Versus the Snow's the deal with JH/HS challenges and the impending weather:

JHCB - Challenges will be whatever day we next have school. All winds and percussion will play Twin Peaks m. 1-46 (my apologies for the mix up). Challenges will be videotaped.

FHSCB - Challenges are scheduled for Wednesday. If we do not have school that day, challenges will be the next day we have classes. Woodwinds will challenge over Americans We (letter J to the end), brasses over And The Angels Called (m. 41-100), and percussion will challenge over Americans We snare part (letter H to the end). Challenges will be videotaped.

Best of luck to all challengers and challengees!

FMB - North Union Festival Sept. 29

I'm pleased that Mr. Leavitt at North Union High School is going though with the first annual band festival this coming September. This is a non-competitive event that should be fun for everyone involved. They tried to get it going this past fall, but just got too late of a start. There will be as many as 12 bands, and I have committed the FMB to this event. We will most likely do an early contest on September 29 and then do the festival in the evening. Although this will be a two-performance day, the good news is we will NOT being doing two contests on any one day this season. I think everyone be happier and healthier because of it.

Pep Band Seniors - Write Ups ASAP

Pep band seniors need to get your write ups to Mrs. Reed ASAP. If you were in marching band, you can just see her and she can edit or just re-use your write up from football senior night. Please also note the dress code for senior night: please wear your pep band shirt and nice pants or jeans and nice shoes or tennis shoes.

Grammy Awards Tonight!

They're kind of long and drawn out, but the performances at the Grammys are worth seeing. You'll see all kinds of musicians juxtaposed with complimentary and even conflicting artists, and see the largest collection of music stars you'll witness all year. The show is tonight at 8PM on CBS.

2 Hour Delay Friday

I will be at the Ohio Music Educators Association conference Friday. Please be on your best behavior for your substitute and follow directions.

FHSCB Podcast 2/2/07

I have posted the first ever FHSCB podcast to the web site. This iPod-ready podcast is available for download by right clicking on the link below and "Download Linked File" . (NOTE: Safari Users MUST right click and "Download Linked File" or you will only get a txt file...don't ask me why. I haven't figured it out yet!)

FHSCB Podcast 2/2/07 (8.7 Mb)

The right channel is the band, the left channel is my comment track. If you just want to hear the band, set balance to full right (or only put in your right earbud). If you want to hear band and comments, set balance to center or put in both earbuds.

As we have missed quite a bit of rehearsal, using this podcast to learn from your own performance can be a productive and rewarding experience. Listen to the podcast with your music in front of you and use your pencil to make changes. We'll implement changes based on your February 2 performance this week and next week.

2 Hour Delay Wednesday

Really. I'm not kidding. Two-hour delay Wednesday for Fairbanks Local Schools. See you then. Maybe. (via

No. I'm Not Kidding. Closed Tuesday

Fairbanks Schools closed again on Tuesdays. (via You all better be enjoying this, because we've got a LOT of work to do when (and if) we do return.

BUMP: Pep Band - Tropical Paradise on Friday! (now 7PM)

The Fairbanks Pep Band will perform at this Friday's homecoming game. We rehearse at 7:00. Dress for the evening is to match the theme...."Tropical Paradise." Please come prepared with your Hawaiian shirts, leis, sunglasses, straw hats, grass skirts, etc. Please keep the dress code in mind, however. Be sure to keep everything covered that needs to be covered. I really don't think it will be a problem as it's probably going to be about 10 degrees on Friday night. *lol* See you there!

FHSCB - What I Forgot...

Oh yeah...FHSCB...I remember the bad news. We have to start working on sight reading soon. One of our four scores at contest is based on sight reading, and the best way to get good at sight reading is by doing it regularly. We'll have our first contest-type sight reading practice next week!

Quote of the Day - Love

"When love beckons you, follow him, Though his ways are hard and steep, And when his wings enfold you, yield to him, Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you. And when he speaks to you, believe him, Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste in the garden."
