FHSCB - Pirates is Posted; Will Be In Next Week

I have posted an mp3 of the Pirates of the Caribbean piece we will be playing for Spring concert on the Members Only page. It is 5.5 minutes and uses some themes from the first movie, as well as three from the newest film, including The Krakon. Pretty cool. If you forget the username/password, just email me.

The sheet music for Pirates will be in early next week. Stanton's is expecting it in tomorrow, then it will take a few days to get to us.

Out This Morning

I'm out this morning only. Please be on your best behavior for your sub.

I will be back for afternoon classes, and we will rehearse in 5th band, Choir, and FHSCB.

Congratulations, FHSCB!

Congratulations to the Fairbanks High School Concert Band for earning the rating of "excellent" from the Ohio Music Educators Association this past Saturday at Groveport Madison High School. The 62-member wind and percussion ensemble performed Three Pieces for American Band Set No. 2 by Timothy Broege, Americans We by Henry Fillmore, and And The Angels Called by James Swearingen. The group also received a rating of "superior" in the sight reading portion of their evaluation. Mr. Keller would like to thank each and every musician for their outstanding dedication and hard work in preparing for this year's OMEA contest. The group would like to thank all of the parents, family, and friends who made the early morning drive to Groveport to support our fine Fairbanks musicians. Updated

Image has been updated with a recap of this weekend's OMEA contest, as well as info on upcoming events like the Spring concert, and the FHSCB concert at Vet's in Marysville. Check it all out so you are "in the know."

FHSCB Contest Reminder

Just a few little reminders about details for Saturday's contest:

School is open at 6:45, we load at 7AM, and depart at 7:30. Please wear your concert dress on the bus. We warm at 9:15 AM and perform at 10. We get our rating at 11AM and head home immediately after. Return to FHS at 12 noon.

If you're not riding the bus home, I need a signed parent note by 7:30 before we leave.

Maps are available on the info rack in the band room, or by clicking HERE.

The event is free and open to the public for moms, dads, family, and friends of the FSHCB. No audio or video recording of any kind is permitted in the auditorium, and the penalty is our disqualification, so please keep them off and away during our performance, and the performance of other bands.

See you in the AM!

PS. Go to bed and get some sleep.

Scheduling Confusion

Just in case you were confused, when signing up for band next year:

BAND is full year concert and marching. If you're doing both, sign up for this one.

MARCHING BAND is for those who are only doing marching band, i.e. guard members. You must have my permission to sign up for marching band only if you play an instrument.

CONCERT BAND is just band 2nd, 3rd, and 4th nine weeks. If you are doing volleyball, football, or the like, and don't plan on marching, this is the class for you.

If there are any concerns or questions about the whole scheduling thing, please let me know. I would be happy to help. :-)

This is pretty cool.

I'm kinda on Star Wars overload right now, but even I have to admit this is pretty cool.

The Pachelbel Canon Rant

My friend Doug Masson, a pal from college who is now a lawyer in Indiana, sent me this YouTube clip of a comedian professing how much he hates Pachelbel's Canon in D. It's proof of several things. First, the universality of being a child musician. Secondly, the truth about some instruments getting the good parts and others getting the boring "loser" parts. Finally, that all pop music really does use the same chords. Make sure you get to the end of the clip. Very funny!

P.S. - The link won't work at Fairbanks, although there is no objectionable content.

If you have pictures you would like to share, please email them to me and I will be happy to post them.

I also got the remaining video and audio from Tuesday night's concert put up on the podcasts page. There are mp3's of your performances, as well as a video version of all three performing groups. There's something for everyone whether you're on dial-up or broadband.

We'll be back around noon at FHS. Please make sure you alarm (or alarmS) are set and you are ready to go Saturday morning.

Bravo! Brava!

Congratulations to all the performers in the middle school and high school who played last night. The concert was a great success! I was very pleased with all the performances, especially with the fact that we prepared for this concert in the shortest amount of time we have ever had. Podcasts of the concert will be up on the web page sometime in the next 24 hours. I'll post a notice here that they are ready to download. Thanks again for a great night!

If You Are Sick For Tonight's Concert...

Please drop me a note to let me know you are ill. Send me a quick email to You will still need a note upon your return to insure your absence is excused. Take care of yourself and get well as soon as possible!

If you were ill today and are feeling better, you are welcome to come to tonight's concert since it is a co-curricular activity (and not extra-curricular).

Concert Tonight; Weather NOT A Concern

Concert tonight at 7 PM. JHCB, FHSCB, and HS Choir, as well as the HS woodwind trio are on the bill for the event. It may snow overnight, but not until well after the concert has concluded, so weather is not a concern for tonight. Choir needs to be in the MS cafe at 6:40, everyone else needs to be in their seats with their families at 7PM to listen to the beginning of the concert. The entire shindig should take no longer than 1:10. See you there!
