All money is due in the mailbox no later than Friday, May 11. Make checks or money orders out to Fairbanks Music Boosters and deposit in the booster mailbox.

I wish this could be a little more convenient, but I have to work with the little time I have available this week. Thanks for your patience and help on this crazy 5-day span. The concert is in three short weeks!

Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007)

Image
I just read in the NY times Arts that world-renowned cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich has passed away at the age of 80. I and a group of band/choir students saw Rostropovich conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 2004. Besides being such a fantastic performance, I was thrilled to teach everyone how to pronounce his name. (Mee-stah-slahv Ross-tro-po-fitch). He will be missed.

40 Songs That Changed The World

Image
How many of them do you recognize? You can read the list, listen to all 40 songs, and even give feedback at Rollingstone.com. (May be blocked at school) The only one I didn't recognize was by Black Flag, but I have to be honest that I never really appreciated punk until I was 35. I've got some catching up to do.

7th Graders - Get THIS!

My seventh grade students will appreciate this article I posted on the Good Music Adventure. Looks like Yoshimi might be coming to the Great White Way.

I Need A Cymbal Player

Image
I am still in need of a cymbal player for the 2007 Fairbanks Marching Band. If you were invited join the FMB this year and have not accepted the invitation, please consider joining the drumline by being my crash cymbal player. If no invitees are interested, I would consider any student in grade 8-11 willing to take the position. Music reading ability is a plus, but not required...we will teach you how to read music. Crash cymbals are a very important part of the marching band sound, and I would like a high-quality person to take this spot. Upper classmen who think they've missed their chance to be a part of the most exciting student organization in the school - this could be for you! Please contact Mr. Keller ASAP if you are interested in the spot.

JHCB - Listen to Harry Potter

Image
I found a recording of the JHCB's Harry Potter music, but it is in RealAudio format, so you won't be able to download and burn, but you will be able to stream online using RealPlayer. Click HERE to go listen. Click HERE if you need the RealPlayer. Please listen, practice, and prepare for our next rehearsal.

UPDATE:
Thanks to Hannah M. for pointing out the bad link. This is the REAL version we're playing. Sorry for the confusion.

5th Band Picture is Up

Image
I'm sorry it took me so long, guys. I finally got the fifth grade band picture up on the Flickr page. I'll have it up on Fairbanksband.org later today. View, download, print...whatever you want to do. I'm so excited that we're finally rehearsing together. Last Thursday was great, and I'm looking forward to seeing you all again this Thursday. Keep up the good work!

Quote of the Day - "Success"

Image
"Never continue in a job you don't enjoy. If you're happy in what you're doing, you'll like yourself, you'll have inner peace. And if you have that, along with physical health, you will have had more success than you could possibly have imagined."

I Think This Might Be A Bad Idea

Image
Hey, I'm all for superheroes. I'm a big fan. I'm also an admirer of the broadway musical scene as well. However, apparently U2's Bono and the Edge have been approached about writing music for a "Spiderman" broadway musical. I must be honest that I'm skeptical, and that's being conservative. If they pull it off, I'll eat my words, but I have a hunch they might have a flop on their hands.

Anyways, I ran into Spiderman on Broadway last Spring...and trust me...it was quite disappointing.

Victor Wooten is an Amazing Bass Player. Trust Me.

Image
If you don't know who Victor Wooten is, you should. He's the bass player for Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and is one of the most phenomenal electric bass players in the world. I found this clip of a solo of his while surfing and thought I would share. He is a true virtuoso on the instrument and an incredible musician. Check out the video below.

Classroom Computers...Be Good.

I have been informed by Mr. Thaman, our district technology coordinator, that the usage of anonymizers and proxies on school computers is in direct violation of the district technology policy. Any effort to circumvent the government-mandated filter to access social sites, auction sites, or inappropriate content will result in direct consequences and you will be sent to the office for such infractions. Your Internetprivileges will be revoked and you may even face further disciplinary action including Saturday school and/or suspensions. I will be enforcing this policy on the public computers in the band room. Please don't attempt to access YouTube, MySpace, Ebay, or other inappropriate content from school computers or you will be reprimanded. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. If you have non-band friends who have been utilizing computers in the band room, especially after school hours, please spread the word to them as well.

Vets Memorial Dedication Band - May 19

Image
FHSCB brass, saxophones, and percussionists...I have an outstanding opportunity for you. Mr. Bob Sements is putting together a band made up of Marysville, Fairbanks, and North Union musicians which will perform at the May 19 dedication of the Union County Veteran's Memorial on the court house lawn. Weekly rehearsals will be 7-9 (day of the week TBA) at the Marysville Middle School band room. I need a few more people to join in this activity so we can make a good showing at this important community event. Currently I only have one trumpet and one saxophone. French horns, trombones, tubas and percussionists need to step up to the plate and bat for FHS. Please contact Mr. Keller ASAP if you are interested. Rehearsals will start next week!

Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007)

Kurt Vonnegut, one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century, and one of my personal favorites, has passed away at the age 84. He died last night in Manhattan after a brain injury caused by a fall. He will be missed. Please take this time to check out what he did and why he was so important.

Percussion Symphony?

Image
Ever wonder what would happen if an entire symphony was written for just percussion instruments? So did Charles Wuorinen. So, in 1976 he composed one. It's not often performed, but the Julliard School and the Manhattan School of Music have collaborated and made it come to life in New York City. Read the entire NYT article here.

You can sample and/or buy the recording at the iTunes Music Store by clicking HERE.

Choir - Listen To Your Music

Choir members - I have posted mp3's of some of your Spring concert music to the Members Only page. The recording of Now Is The Month Of Maying is the original version, so listen carefully for your part. The recording of Bring Him Home, is also the original version from Les Miserables, and is NOT in our key...it's much higher. What you CAN learn from these recordings is good phrasing, style, and diction. Download, listen, learn, and enjoy!

PS - If you don't know the username/password, please just email me.

6th Band - Train Heading West

Sixth grade band members will be playing "Train Heading West" by Timothy Broege for our Spring concert on May 21. (If you need the username/password, please email me) Please listen to the recording and be prepared to sight read at your next rehearsal next week!

Guard Mini-Camp May 7-11 After School

Image
Guard members for the 2007 marching band will have a fundamentals clinic and rehearsal sessions after school on May 7-11 from 3:15 to 5:15. During these sessions, guard members will learn the basics of spinning, body movement, and dance that will be required for the upcoming season. The week will culminate with an audition. Guard members must be proficient in fundamentals learned during the week to earn a full-time spot in the fall guard. If you have questions about this week of work, please contact Mrs. Barker. Attendance is required for 2007 fall guard candidates

Thank You Rookie Parents

Image
Thanks to all the first-time FMB parents who met with me tonight. It was a pleasure to see all of you and meet some of you for the first time. I appreciate your interest, your questions, and the support of your children in this wonderful endeavor. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions about the upcoming marching band season.

REMINDER: FMB "Rookie Parent" Meeting - TONIGHT, April 4

Image
There will be a short meeting for FMB "rookie parents" on TONIGHT (Wednesday)., April 4 at 7PM in the band room. If you are a parent of an FMB member for this summer/Fall, and have not had any children in my marching band program before, I need to meet with you for a few minutes to discuss highlights of the program, the monetary situation, attendance expectations, as well as parent duties such as chaperoning trips, providing food/water, and other goodies. If neither parent is able to attend this meeting, please contact me so I can set up a time for us to discuss this very important information. The Fairbanks Music Boosters will also be on hand and will be able to accept band camp deposits at this time as well!

With over 20 rookies members in this year's band, we have a lot of work and training to do to insure their success. Similarly, parents need to know what it takes to keep this band running smoothly, both on and off the field. See you there!
