Mr. Keller Helps: "Victor Needs A Trumpet"

"I am looking for a good student starter trumpet. It needs to be in good
shape, small dings and scratches or blemishes in the brass are acceptable
as long as they don't affect tone quality or valve movement. A mouthpiece
is not required. I am willing to negotiate a reasonable price. Prospective
sellers can contact me at the following"

MR. FANNIN – 937-209-9122

Veteran's Dedication Band Update

For those FHSCB members involved in the Veterans Memorial Dedication on May 19.

From Mr. Sements:

Thanks to Steve Fannin for taking over practice Sunday evening.
Here is what is going on.....
My daughter Kellie, a freshmen at OSU Marion, suffered a head trauma in falling Friday night - she was rushed and then life flighted to OSU hospital in Columbus. After several days of intensive care, she is progressing much faster than anticipated.
I am a lucky man to have a lucky daughter......I appreciate your patience. I am unsure of my status Wednesday, but with continued good news, I hope to at least attend practice.
In coming into town this evening, I noticed the work around the memorial. Things are in place. We will practice Wednesday and then our next full group meeting will be Saturday morning at 9:00 AM somewhere.
Wednesday: 7:00 PM MMS Bandroom
Saturday: 9:00 AM - memorial.
What to wear? Anything nice, I would suggest black slacks, white top, but we can discuss that Wednesday....
Hopefullly Scot…

Teacher Appreication Thank-Yous

On behalf of the entire FHS/FMS faculty, I would like to thank all of the parents and businesses who donated time, money, and goodies to last week's Teacher Appreciation festivities. The food and fun get bigger and better every year. As much as we love good food, the satisfaction of teaching comes from knowing that we are preparing our students for world outside, and perhaps preparing the world outside for them. Thank you for giving us the little boost to get us through the school year. We appreciate YOU as well :-)

One Week To Go!

It's one week to the Spring Concert! (May 21, 7PM) Musicians are reminded that attendance at rehearsals this week is imperative. Please be here or be excused. Make sure you get plenty of rest and drink plenty of fluids this week to stay healthy. Last chance for stragglers to get down notes and rhythms and vocalists to memorize lyrics. Please be mentally and physically prepared for this big event. If you need more details on the event, click here.

St. John's Lutheran Member Mission Outreach or Fairbanks FFA

Prom Weekend - Be Careful

I sincerely hope all band and choir members attending this weekend's prom festivities have a wonderful time. The weather is going to be beautiful and I'm sure you will all look your best and behave like young ladies and gentlemen. It is indeed a very special time and you will remember it the rest of your lives. However, I implore all FHS students to make smart choices this weekend. Please keep in mind your family and friends who care about you dearly when you are faced with a choice between what is right and what is dangerous. Have a wonderful but SAFE weekend. I expect to see you all alive and well on Monday morning here at FHS.

Candy Bar Money is Due - May 11

FMB members: Candy bar money is now due. Please be sure to make checks and money orders (no cash) out to Fairbanks Music Boosters and deposit in the mailbox ASAP. An updated spreadsheet will be posted next week in the band room.

Thank You To My Performers

I wanted to thank all you members of my performing groups for the tremendous effort you have been putting in during the past two weeks. Things that were once shaky are now solid. Tone, intonation, and precision are all improved. Music is starting to come from the heart and not just the head. Despite the wonderful weather, you have all been focused and productive. I am so pleased with the progress you have made recently . Please keep up the good work and let's drive to the finish with our year-end concerts. Making music with you has been very enjoyable this Spring :-)

Juniors Approved for Friday

I have the following band juniors on the approved list to work on prom. All others should be in rehearsal. Those excused are welcome to take a break from prom preparations to rehearse if you wish, but if not, you are off the hook for the day. Good luck on your decorating!

Allison, Jastyn, January, Cody, Marilyn.

Quote for Today - Music

"Nothing is better than music. When it takes us out of time, it has done more for us than we have the right to hope for. It has broadened the limits of our sorrowful lives; it has lit up the sweetness of our hours of happiness by effacing the pettinesses that diminish us, bringing us back pure and new to what was, what will be and what music has created for us."

Sad News Today

From Mr. Montgomery, High School Principal:

"We have learned early this morning of an accident which took the life of Jimmy Vandre. Jimmy graduated from Fairbanks in 2004. He has family that also graduated from Fairbanks more recently. We have our counselors in the RIC room offering support."

Jimmy was a member of the Fairbanks High School Concert Band 2000 to 2002 and played the trumpet. He was a fine young man. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. More information will be posted here as it becomes available.

FHSCB - Juniors Working on Prom Friday

I only have two Juniors so far on the list to work in the gym on Friday (January, Marilyn). Due to an abbreviated rehearsal on Tuesday thanks to a 2:40 assembly, I need all other Juniors in rehearsal on Friday. If you're on the list, you're okay. If you're not, you need to be here 7th and/or 8th period.

FMB Rookies, Order Your Shirt

If you are an FMB rookie this fall, you'll need to order your shirt from the boosters before school is out. If you lost your order form, you can download one here. Fill out the form, attach a check or money order for $20, and put it in the mailbox by the end of school. It is imperative that you get your order in before school ends, because if you wait until marching band starts on July 16, it will be too late. Please take care of this as soon as possible.

Veterans who have outgrown, lost, or destroyed their old shirt, are reminded of the same.

JHCB - Please Be Prepared For Monday

JHCB members are reminded that they are required to practice this weekend. We have 6 short rehearsals until we need to be concert-ready and we are nowhere near that point as of today. I don't want to have to drop a piece, but if our level of preparation and concentration level are not improved come Monday, that may have to become a possibility. Let's drive to the finish and give an outstanding performance on May 21, and not just a mediocre one.

FMB at OSU? It Just Might Happen!

I was at first disappointed that I had to move our last weekend of contest to October 6, but after receiving the list of contests for the fall, I believe it is going to work out for the best and I have a guess that you're going to agree with me.

For the first time in over a decade, the Ohio State University will be hosting an OMEA band competition on Saturday, October 6, and I have entered our name in the registration line. Our acceptance will not be confirmed until June, but since I got to this so early, there is a very good chance the FMB will be performing at Ohio Stadium on that October 6 date. If I didn't think our chances were good at getting in, I would not have filled you all in on this, but it looks very promising so consider yourself "in the loop."

When I hear one way or the other, I'll be sure to let you know. If the final list is not made public until after school is out, I will post the decision here on the blog for you to read. Keep your fingers c…

Upcoming Performances

This is just a little blog reminder of all the upcoming performances in the Fairbanks Music Department:

May 21, 7 PM - Spring Concert (5th, 6th, JH, HS Choir, FHSCB)
May 24, 2:15 PM - FHSCB rehearsal at Vets
May 26, 10:15 AM - FHS Graduation (FHSCB and Choir)
May 28, 9:00 PM - Memorial Day Parade in Unionville (Old FMB only)

More information on all of these performances can be found on the FMB page.

FHSCB - Con Larghezza

I looked up "Larghezza" on an Italian-English dictionary and found that it means "width." So the literal translation is "with width", meaning play as long as possible on each note, or legato. Whew. That was WAY too hard.

6th Grade Band - Remember our "Deal".

Sixth grade band members, please remember our deal for Friday and Monday. If you have gym on Friday, please go. If you have gym on Monday, please go. Those who do not have gym those days, we will rehearse in the band room.

Please also remember the other part of the deal. Please get in two good practice sessions on Train Heading West before our next rehearsal. As we are on a tight schedule, it is of the utmost importance. Thanks so much for your strong effort so far, but we still have quite a ways to go. If you've not already, remember to visit the Members Page and download the recording so you can listen and/or play along! If you have forgotten the username and password, just email me and I'll send it right to you!

All FHS Students and Parents Should Read This Article

Especially with prom/graduation time coming up, I think everyone involved should know what's right and wrong and what is legal and illegal. I highly encourage all high school students and parents to read this article: Parents who host, lose the most.

Vets Memorial Dedication Band - May 19 UPDATE

For those brass and saxophones who have honorably volunteered to perform with the Veteran's Memorial dedication band, I received more details from Mr. Sements today. Here is the info on the first two rehearsals:

"Your Band Director is providing this letter of notification to you in hope that you will be able to participate with other Union County Brass Band students for a very worthwhile community service project.

On Saturday, May 19, at 11:00 A.M. the official dedication of the Union County Veterans Memorial will take place on the front lawn of the Union Co. Courthouse. This beautiful memorial that is nearly completed will be unveiled in a big public ceremony. The Veterans committee has requested that area musicians assist with playing some patriotic music.

The concept of the performance group will be an ALL COUNTY BRASS BAND.
Band members from Triad, North Union, Fairbanks and Marysville High Schools are being asked to participate. There will be some rehearsals scheduled and t…
