Video From Westerville

FMB Westerville 2008 from Ben Keller on Vimeo.

Here's the video from Saturday. I think you'll notice the marked improvement in our marching execution over last contest. I think you'll also notice how it was probably recorded on a 1980's era VHS camcorder, as evident by the horrible quality, the "too much" information on the display, and the fact that the camera cuts out a few times then runs slow and speeds back up to regular speed over a few seconds. It's enough to learn from, though. Thoughts? Comments? Constructive criticism?

lol... the quality of this video just kills me! haha. It's much akin to the management of this contest and quality of judging...

I really don't think we did as well as you guys put it off like we did...

trombone soli sucked.
low brass sounds crappy through most of the show...

plus, there are holes that make our show look like a thousand times more lame and "not right"...

it just wasn't our day, I think.

we're all getting tired of the show, and, I for one, cannot wait to be DONE WITH IT for good...

I think that it shows that we're so sick of the show, and as one bit of criticism, I'd like to propose that we lay off of the contest show for a bit...

Everytime we do a straight march-through, I wanna knock myself out with my stupid instrument.

I know other people feel that way, too, and I think that we need a break from marching the contest show.
we know it well enough, and I just personally think that a lot of the "ERRORS" that we're showing in our performances is just plain being sick and tired of marching the show.

we know our drills.
we know our music.
I think we just need to back off of it for awhile.

NONE of this was meant in a disrespectful manner, but I'm positive that others will agree with me.

I think that if you give us a chance, and give us a break from the show, we'll do SO MUCH better later.

I feel like the show is being drilled into my head TOO MUCH at this point.

Anyway, if you ask around, I know other people feel that same way I do about it...

and I think we need to keep brushing up on music and maintaining memorization, but as far as music and drill....blah. we've got it.

Again-not meant disrespectfully, I'm just speaking for myself, and I'm sure for several others in the group.

I dont look forward to rehearsals or performances anymore...
there's no motivation...

it's like "OMG NOT WICKED AGAIN..." *frustration*

and if I could count the number of times throughout the year that I've heard "GRRRRRRRRR I DONT WANNA GO TO BAND TONIGHT..." this year, I think it would be in the hundreds... honestly.

So, I'm just trying to be honest here, and it is "constructive criticism" in my mind, so yeah...

ANYWAY, thank you for at least listening, and I hope you'll consider that we're just burned out on the show...
2 more hours of cleaning this week is going to be way too much, I think...

that two hours of cleaning time will feel like years.

Kirsten,

I can certainly see your viewpoint. I know there's just some things that aren't going to get fixed in the show this year, so we'll do the best we can for next weekend. We have some simple fixes planned that will not take too much time to implement. I promise we'll spend quite a bit of time on senior show this week. Don't think it's just you. I get burned out on the show too, and that's why our last contest is always in early October. Believe it or not, there are two more weeks of contests that we could attend, but I choose not to because exactly the point that you make in your last comment. All of the other bands go through it too, only it's even worse. They rehearse 3-4 times a week after school and many of them attend 6-7 contest per season. Again...I would rather be us, for the sheer sanity factor :-)

I actually disagree with Kirsten. I really like the show this year and almost wish we didn't have to do senior show at all. I feel like we get better with each performance and always look forward to rehearsal where we can fix the mistakes we have (and the number gets smaller each week).

I DID think this was our best performance yet. The lines looked good, the drill was clean in most places, and the music sounded good from where I was (everything just sounds awful on the video, but I know it wasn't like that during the live performance). I just want to top this at the next contest and I'll be very happy with the season!

I haven't seen a lot of your performances, but it seems to get better every time I see a video. I agree with Mr. Keller, and that there are a few certain things that, without too much work, can yield good results. Other than that, enjoy a well written show for the week or so you have left. I look forward to seeing it this weekend!
