My Apologies: Fundraiser Items NOT Available Today

Due to a broken down truck and an extreme lack of communication from the trucking company and Century Resources, the fundraising items are not being delivered today. They will be delivered tomorrow morning and be available at their original times tomorrow. See this post for the original schedule, except apply it to tomorrow (Friday, October 31). I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I just wish today could start over and things go as planned.

Colonial's Horns A Plenty Sale

Lots of good deals to be had here, including rebates from the manufacturers in many cases. $1800 Buffet clarinets for $899. They're clearing out their stock, so it's an excellent time to step up to an intermediate or professional model. If you're looking for a new instrument, this is THE time of year to contact Music Arts/Colonial to try out something new.

Lost And Found: Cleaned out on Friday

I'm going through the lost and found on Friday and throwing away everything that is still in the box. Some items that may be of interest to you:
Marching band shoes, Sweatshirts, Clipboards, Gloves, Shoes, Binder Notebooks
Get it all now while it's still around. As of Friday, it's all trash.

FHSCB Listening

FHSCB members can listen to their music in a couple of different ways. The following are available in the FHSCB folder on the members only page:

Dedicatory Overture
National Emblem March

If you forget your username and password, please email me.

Also, these pieces are available for streaming from Stanton's Sheet Music:
Tidings of Comfort And Joy

Listening to your music is a great way to learn about concepts of balance and blend, following the melodic line, tempo and tempo changes, and appropriate tone quality. Use these resources to make your personal performance the best it can be!

Quote(s) For Today

"To win without risk is to triumph without glory."
Pierre Corneille (1606 - 1684)

"I'd rather be a failure at something I love than a success at something I hate."
George Burns (1896 - 1996)

I thought both quotes I found today were great and I couldn't choose between the two. Somehow in my brain they are similar, although they are about very different topics, so I decided to share both with you today.

Yeah...It's Gonna Rain.

FMB members should come prepared for the foul weather tomorrow night. The required uniform is black marching shoes, blue jeans, official raincoats, hats, and gloves. Please feel free to layer under your jeans, and wear as many layers on your upper body as you wish under your official raincoat. Please also consider gloves for under your gloves and hats for under your hats. Umbrellas are also recommended. As I always say, come prepared...or come prepared to be miserable. Let's cheer the Panthers on to the NWCC championship!

BTW, we load at 5 and leave at 5:30.

HS Choir: Listening

I have put mp3's of your latest performance piece on the members-only page for your listening convenience. Click HERE to go to the members site. If you do not remember the username and password, simply email me and I will send it to you.

FMB: Schedule/Uniform For Friday

Same itinerary as last week. We load at 5 and leave at 5:30. We will return to FHS at approximately 11:30.

Dress is as follows: Wear blue jeans, preferrably with some type of long-legged layer underneath. Wear your black marching shoes (extra socks might be a good choice). Then wear something warm on the top half of your body. We will top off the uniform with cold weather/raincoats, hats and gloves. Wearing a warmer pair of gloves under your white gloves is permitted and encouraged. It is supposed to be cold and wet on Friday night so I wan to keep you as warm and dry as possible while still looking uniform and saving our uniforms from the mud so they can survive the Holiday parade.

FHSCB: Auditions Start Monday (UPDATED)

Just a reminder that FHSCB auditions begin on Monday at 2:09. Please be prepared with scales, rudiments, and your prepared piece. If you have not signed up for an audition time, please do so ASAP. You will not receive credit for the course if you do not perform an audition.

There are many open audition times today, that means that five people have not signed up for a spot. Please do this today. If these time are not taken, I'll ask this afternoon if anyone who is ready for their audition would like to go early.

Quote For Today: Happiness

"Many people think that if they were only in some other place, or had some other job, they would be happy. Well, that is doubtful. So get as much happiness out of what you are doing as you can and don't put off being happy until some future date."
-Dale Carnegie

FMB: No Rehearsal Monday

So I figured up everything that we need to accomplish this week for FES/Circleville, and the away game at Marion Catholic, and found out that we simply don't need FOUR HOURS of rehearsal to accomplish all of this.

This being said, I'm canceling Monday's after school rehearsal. Please spread the word to your non-internet type FMB friends. I'll also have it on Monday morning's announcements. Go home. Rest. Do homework. Watch some TV. Be a teenager. Wednesday's rehearsal will run the full time 3:15 to 5:15 so we can do all our weekend prep AND have our end-of-the-year festivities.

Everyone deserves a day off. Especially you all :-)

JHCB CORRECTED Challenge Results

Apologies, but I wasn't clear on the two-point rule for challenges, so I've had to reverse my decision between Paytie and Christian. Paytie was defeated by only one point, so her position will be retained.

Again, If you were defeated - keep your chin up and focus on preparation for the next challenge. Realize that YOU are important -- Everyone is important. You'll all start working with me on Monday morning! I can't wait.

Eddie M. defeats Matt S.
John P. defeats Alli B.
Christian C. defeats Paytie I.

The Perfect Fundraiser! Verizon Gives Us Money

UPDATE: I understand some of you had trouble downloading the form, so I have uploaded file do my personal server and updated all of the links on this post. If you had trouble before, it should work now. Please let me know if this one doesn't work.

These are the best kind of fund raisers. You do what you normally do and we make the money at no additional cost to you. Here's how it works:

If you are thinking about signing with Verizon Wireless, download this handy-dandy form and take it in with you to any Verizon retail center. For every line you sign up for, the Fairbanks Music Department gets $25 from Verizon. If you are currently a Verizon customer, when you renew to a 1 or 2-year contract with our form, we get $25 from Verizon. If you add additional lines or move to a family plan, we get $25 per line. After you take the form to the store, you'll have to mail or fax it in, but honestly, that's all you have to do.

Please spread the word to your family and friend…

Levy Information

In the upcoming November 4 election, the Fairbanks Local Schools will be asking voters to approve an emergency operating levy due to increased expenses the last few years. Gas prices, unfunded mandates, and inflation have made it necessary to increase the funding a bit as well. Personally, I can attest that the treasurer's office and administrators do a fantastic job at budgeting and spending your tax dollars effectively. Our district does not have a lot of frills or extravagant spending, operating well on just enough money. Because of this, when cuts have to be made, they hurt in obvious spots. Busing. Teachers. Extra-curricular activities. Foreign language. Music.

To learn all about what this levy means to you, your schools, and your music department, please visit and read all of the levy information. It won't cost that much more to you and your family, and its passage will continue the fine education we provide here at Fairbanks.

The next Fairbanks Music Booster meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 6PM, at the Buck Ridge Golf Course clubhouse. All parents and friends of the music department are welcome!

FMB: Short Rehearsal Tonight

We will only rehearse until 4:30 today. The weather looks pretty grim. I will stay until 5:15 if your ride can't get there until that time.

Oberlin Conservatory Information

Information on the Oberlin Conservatory of Music can be found at Information on admissions can be found at

Kent State Music Department

I received a mailing from Kent State University, the Hugh A. Glauser School of Music today. Audition dates are November 15, February 7 & 16, March 7, April 4, and April 18.

FMB: Wednesday Rain Plan

It's looking like it could be an all-day rain tomorrow. If it is, rehearsal will be cut short and end at 4:30. I'll make the call as soon as I possibly can. If it's pouring, there's no reason we need to rehearse indoors for longer than that. Please plan accordingly. If you cannot get a ride home at 4:30, you're welcome to stay until 5:15 and memorize music. I will still be here until that time. If you do go home at 4:30, be sure to spend some time memorizing at home if you do not already know the senior show like the back of your hand. Deal?

Fundraiser Forms Past Due

Please turn in your fundraising forms ASAP. I need to send them in no later than Wednesday to Century. I can still take sheets after that time, but they will be listed as "late orders" and are much harder to send in and to sort when they arrive, so I would prefer to get all order sheets in by that time. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me. Sales so far look good all things considering. I'll have a report on what our anticipated profit is sometime Wednesday.

If you are considering making your good-faith donation in lieu of selling, please do it as soon as you can. Make checks payable to "Fairbanks Band" and please put your donation in an envelope with the student's name and hand to me directly.

Thanks to everyone for their support and effort on this big fundraising effort. We appreciate it!

Video From Worthington Contest

Here's video from Worthington contest. I think you'll understand why things ended the way they did after viewing and hearing. Although it was our strongest performance of the year, there were still quite a few noticeable individual execution errors in performance. Music was very strong, but still out of balance in several key sections. The judges very much liked the drill and the props, and I especially learned a lot of things this season that will help me prepare for next fall and help our success in the upcoming seasons. Only those open to criticism will ever improve and I'm proud of you for continuing to move in a positive direction thoughout this season, FMB members. Also a BIG thanks to all the parents, family, and friends that helped out with our impromptu props on Saturday. We could not have done it without you!

Parent/Helper Instructions For Saturday

Thanks so much to all the helpers who are assisting with moving the Wicked screens tomorrow. Parents are welcome to ride the bus, but those who wish to follow behind us (or have to do so) need to park in the spectator lot and then meet us immediately at the buses so you can get stamped and be admitted to the "pit crew". If you don't meet us right after we arrive you can still help but may have to pay admission to the contest after you are done helping. I'm looking forward to our final contest of the season and together we can make it the best FMB performance this year!

FMB: Repair Kits

A Note To Parents and Students - Welcome Mr. Jerew

Beginning on Wednesday, October 8, Mr. Brad Jerew will become a fixture in the FMS/FHS band and choir program as he is student teaching with me through the end of the calendar year. He is a student at Mount Vernon Nazarene University majoring in music education. He spent two years at Ohio State as a member of the Ohio State University Marching Band. He will be working with me in all of my classes, and will be your primary teacher for most of the month of November. Student teaching is an extremely important experience for developing teachers, so please be cooperative and as helpful as possible. We welcome Mr. Jerew to the Fairbanks Music Department and wish him well as he embarks on his career as a music teacher. If you think he looks familiar, it's because he has been assiting me with the Fairbanks Marching Band since band camp this Summer, so he's far from new to my high school students :-)

FMB Seniors: Write Ups Due Oct. 7

FMB seniors need to get their write-ups for senior night to Mrs. Reed no later than Tuesday, October 7. Never done one before? Here's how you do it:

(your name) is the son/daughter of (your hometown). He/she has participated in (your activities). He/she would like to thank (who you want to thank) and wish good luck to (who you want to wish good luck).

Pretty simple, eh? You can email them directly to Mrs. Reed and make her life SO much easier. Write ups may be edited for length or content, so choose your words well.

Holiday Concert Reminder; Changes

The music department's annual Holiday concert will be on Monday, December 15 at 7 PM in the high school gym. Performing groups will include the 5th and 6th grade choirs, JHCB, HS Choir, and FHSCB. Attendance is required for performers.

Since the 5/6 grade choirs will be joining us, I have moved the 6th grade band's first performance to the March concert. This way 6th graders will not be doing double duty (choir AND band) at this first concert of the year.

Pics from Westerville Contest

Pics from Saturday's contest are up on the Flickr page. Thanks to Mr. Jerew, Caleb, and Paige for taking pics as well.

FMB Parents: I Need Your HELP!

So I have concocted some major scenery and props for our final contest this Saturday at Thomas Worthington HS. The large black screens that spell out "Wicked" look fantastic, however, they will require two adults per screen to move them from the trailer to the field and back (2 adults per screen). This is quite a bit larger than our usual pit crew so I need any and all parents who are available to help out if possible. You will be admitted to the contest free of charge since you are on the "pit crew." So got that going for you....which is nice.

Also needed is an additional vehicle that can help carry the props to the contest. A pickup truck will do (any size really...the screens are 4'X8'). Please email me ASAP if you can help out here as well.
