Bands: Listening for Spring Concert

Image
Much can be learned by listening to your music before we rehearse.  Not only can you become familiar with difficult rhythms, keys, and tempo changes, but you can also hear how the professionals deal with balance, blend, intonation, and phrase shaping.  All of these are streaming media and can be accessed by any computer, including many smartphones and the iPad.  There's not reason (or excuse) to not have a listen before we dig into these great pieces next week!

FHSCB@Vets is Friday, May 27, 7PM

I just booked Veteran's Auditorium in Marysville for our annual FHSCB@Vets concert. The date is on Friday, May 27 at 7pm. I'm excited that our end-of-May schedule is not as hectic this year, with four performances in 10 days, instead of the four performances in 6 days like we have had to do the last several years. Please mark your calendars, ask off from work, wake the family, friends, and neighbors and spread the word about this wonderful annual event that showcases our outstanding Fairbanks musicians!

Just a reminder that all music department events are on theOfficial Calendar of Events!

FMB: Deposit Due April 4

A $50 band camp deposit is due for all 2011 FMB members by Monday, April 4.  Please make a check or money order payable to "Fairbanks Music Boosters" and deposit it in the booster mailbox inside the band room.  This reserves your spot for the 2011 band and allows us to pay our deposit to Ohio Wesleyan University for our July 31-August 5 camp.

You may also pay your deposit by selling two boxes of candy during the April candy bar sale.  Submit your order form (in your March 15 FMB packet) in the mailbox with payment of $52 per box in the mailbox beginning the week of April 4.

Just a reminder that all band members need to have a total of $100 in their account by the end of the school year.  The remaining balance is due at band camp check in on July 31.  You may pay your entire balance at any time with a check or money order in the mailbox.

From the Music Boosters: FMB Q&A

From the Fairbanks Music Boosters:
2011 Fairbanks Marching Band Q & A
We look forward to the new 2011 Fairbanks Marching Band season. The music boosters wanted to put together a little information for parents and answer some of the questions that have come up in the past. If you have other questions please do not hesitate to call or email me at the information at the end of this Q&A.  What is Pre- Camp and Rookie Camp? Pre-camp is a week of practice (from 8am-noon for most band-percussion continues into the afternoon)  in July teaching the new members and refreshing the old members how to march and get ready for the Union County Fair parade in which we participate.  We also use this week to prepare for band camp.  Rookies and squad leaders only work on Monday morning (Rookie Camp) to learn fundamentals and to introduce new members to the group. What does your child need for Rookie Camp? A comfortable pair of shoes, a water bottle, sunscreen, sunglasses, instrument, and music. What i…

FMB: Band Camp Scholarship

Band camp is an amazing week of work, fun, and team building.  It is also a requirement for all FMB members.  The $230 fee covers lodging, food, instruction, programming, and supervision.

We also realize that, while very reasonable compared to many summer camps of this length, it is still a sizable amount of money.  If you are in financial need, one way to offset some of the cost of camp is by applying for a Music Booster Band Camp Scholarship.  Thanks to a private donation, scholarships are granted on financial need as well as contributions to the group.  If you are interested, please download the application in .pdf and submit it in the booster mailbox no later than May 27, 2011.  Printed copies are also available in the band room and in the recently distributed FMB info packet.

Scheduling for 2011-2012

Scheduling Info for 2011-2012 Dear Parents and Band/Choir Students, As the time to think about next year is upon us, I just wanted to drop you a note at this time to clarify some issues with scheduling of classes for next year. If you want to take band or choir, it CAN be done.  Sometimes, you have to make those who are making the schedule a little harder, but it can be done. If you plan on staying in band, you need to have a four-year plan to make sure you can fit band and your other classes in each year.  For example, don’t put off wellness until you are a junior, because it WILL be a schedule conflict.  Plan ahead, and your schedule will be very workable Which class to register for BAND is both concert and marching.  It is recommended that all high school students take both.  MARCHING BAND is marching band “only”.  This is only for guard members, unless express permission is granted from the director.  Don’t try to sneak in and take marching without concert band without prior approval.  I…
