FMB: Monsoon Aftermath...

Image
Thank you, FMB members, for making the most out of an extremely damp situation.  You make me proud to be your director.  I know there were tense times being cooped up in the bus, but you made up for it in the rainy second half.  You sounded great at our brief halftime show as well!

You all need to do the following things ASAP:

1.  Leave your case open and instrument out to dry.  Brasses should wipe off water spots.

2.  Leave your hat out to dry.

3.  Wash your gloves. Wash your socks.

4.  Wash your pants in cold water by themselves and then line dry.

5.  Wash your raincoat. Tumble dry.

6.  Bring your instrument back on Monday.  YOU WILL NEED IT.

7.  Please bring your uniform parts back by Wednesday.

8.  ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND :)  We rehearse Monday 3:15-5:15.

If you have ANY questions about these procedures, please contact me.

Music Departments Fall Fundraiser Starts Today!

Fairbanks Music Department's Annual Fall Cookie DoughFundraiser Sale begins:  Thursday, September 19
Sheets and money are due:  Monday, October 1
Delivery: Tuesday, October 24 Dear Musicians and Parents,
The Fairbanks Music Department is the largest department in the school, serving over 200 students in eight grades.  It takes money to support our musical efforts, and student-raised money is a substantial part of that.  Our goal this year is to raise $6000 from  this sale.  This is the ONLY fundraiser for the music department as a whole this entire school year. This money is used for items like music, supplies, repairs, transportation, instruments, rewards, uniforms/apparel, and many other day-to-day expenses.  It is asked that all members of the music department help in this important fundraising event.
Students are asked to sell 12 items from the sales brochure, and are rewarded with cash on many different levels, including a day off pizza and movie party for sections of each group who…

Fall Fundraiser Kicks Off Tomorrow!

Image
The music department's annual fall fundraiser, the one and ONLY fundraiser run by the music department, kicks off on Thursday, September 19.  Students in 5th grade band, 6th grade band, junior high concert band, high school choir, and high school band will receive their materials, instructions, and list of prizes tomorrow and the sale will begin.  Orders will be taken through Oct. 1.  Money is to be collected at the time of order and checks should be made payable to "Fairbanks Band" or "Fairbanks Choir."  Products will be delivered in mid-October.  We are selling cookie dough and magazines from Great American, who has been serving our program and other programs in our district for over a decade.  Their products are a good value and are simply delicious!

Our goal is to raise over $6,000 for our music program.  This money will be spent on student incentives, transportation, supplies, sheet music, instruments, instrument repair, contest fees, and many other things…

5th Percussion: Videos!

Image
Fifth grade percussionists use a different method book than the wind players.  "Fresh Approach to the Snare Drum" has worked wonders with my beginning drummers since I started using it nearly a decade ago.  While it does not have as much online content as Essential Elements 2000, it does have quite a bit of information on its web site. It includes videos galore on everything from drum assembly to grip to instruction on every rudiment.

5th Parents: A Few Words About Instrument Selection...

A few words on Instrument Selection
If you already have an instrument: You must have your instrument checked by myself, Music Arts Center or another reputable music dealer before your child will be permitted to use it.  Bring it to the parent meeting.  It is important that a child’s instrument be in good working order and in a good state of repair.  It is challenging enough to learn how to play, but even tougher when their instrument is not working properly.  Even though grandpa’s trumpet may be paid for, it may no longer be in good shape.  It is worth the money to bring an instrument up to playing condition.  If an instrument has been neglected or left in storage, it may take up to $200 to renovate it.  I will not permit students to participate with instruments that are not in good working order.  You might want to consider renting a new instrument to make learning for your child easier.
If you are looking to buy an instrument on your own: Cheapest is not always best.  Even though a $50 …

The Seven Purposes

Image
I know that often students and parents wonder why I choose the activities that I do and make the decisions as I do.  They are not arbitrary.  They align with the seven purposes of the Fairbanks Band Program that I set forth in 1993.  They guide everything I do and have helped nearly a generation of students become better students, musicians, and citizens.  Want to know what these seven purposes are?  They are in the band handbook and always have been.  They are also here.  After 20 years of trying my best to stay true to them, I think they have stood up quite well.

The Seven Purposes of the Fairbanks Band Program: The Fairbanks Band program has several important purposes and goals:

1. To provide a quality education in the musical arts;

2. To improve students self-confidence, self-discipline, and work ethic;

3. To provide leadership opportunities and to foster an atmosphere  conducive to music and learning;

4. To prepare students to become better persons, musicians, and citizens through res…
