Welcome Back, Musicians!

I would like to officially welcome back to school all of my band and general music students for the 2015-2016 school year!  I sincerely hope you had a nice vacation and did things that made you happy, and that you are recharged and ready for another session of learning about life and music.

The Fairbanks Marching Band has been hard at work since July 20 preparing their 2015 competition show.  This year's production is based on the opera "Carmen" by Georges Bizet, one of the best and most famous operas of all time.  They will be ready for the home opener football game on Friday, August 28. They will be attending competitions at Westerville Central on September 26, OSU on October 6, and Dublin Jerome on October 10. They will also perform at the North Union Band Festival on September 26 and at the Circleville Pumpkin Show on October 22.

Mrs. Cooper and I are happy to announce we've added a Fall concert to the music department's schedule. It will be an outdoor concert on October 13 at Marysville's Partners Pavillon, and will feature the Youth Choir, HS choir, JH band, and HS marching band. It will be a casual outdoor event and fun for the whole family. We are so excited to bring this new project to reality!

5th Grade Band will be starting in September, so parents and students should stay tuned to the blog for more information in the following weeks.  An assembly for all 5th grade students will be held on Tuesday, September 8.

My general music classes will learn much this year, as sixth graders study music notation, instruments of the orchestra, and a brief history of music. Seventh graders will spend time learning about what makes music so appealing and spending special time on not only Beethoven and Mozart, but also John Cage, John Adams, Miles Davis, and The Beatles.

Band students will NOT need their instruments on their first day of class. Just bring yourself and a pencil.

If you're the kind that likes to REALLY look ahead, the 2015 Holiday Concert is on Monday, December 14 at 7PM in the HS gym. All bands 6-12 grade and both choirs will perform at this traditional annual concert.

Finally, it is the responsibility of all band members and parents to stay up to date by checking our Twitter page frequently, know what events are on the calendar, and ultimately, to follow the fairbanks band attendance policy.  There is not a bench in band, so it is very important that all members be present for performances. If we all work together, the music department can and will be a wonderful forum for students to learn, live, and make music together!

Welcome back!
